Gum disease can be classified in two different stages,
namely Gingivitis and Periodontitis

Gingivitis

Gingivitis is the inflammation of your gums. This is common cause of gum infection and starts when bacteria begin to accumulate in the mouth. When you have missed going for regular teeth cleaning, plaque can often begin to build up causing gums to become swollen and red. This is the result of practicing poor oral hygiene habits at home and inadequate nutrition.

Gingivitis
Periodontitis

Periodontitis

Gingivitis can progress, if left untreated, to Periodontitis. This stage of gum disease is an advanced stage of gingivitis. This stage has the infection attacking the gums and supporting teeth structure. It can lead to destruction of weakened gums and teeth, loosening the attachment and damaging your teeth further. Our dentists recommend practicing good oral hygiene at home which includes regular brushing and flossing, and frequent use of antiseptic mouthwash to prevent gum disease. Replace your toothbrush once every three months and use fluoridated toothpaste to gently but firmly brush your teeth.

In addition, maintain a healthy and balanced diet to ensure proper growth of gums and teeth. Avoid food and beverages containing high amount of sugar. Sugar leads to bacteria accumulating on the gum tissue and supporting tooth structure. Drink plenty of water to produce more saliva and reduce inflammation which can help chemicals from plaque. Visit our clinic for regular dental checkups and our specialist dentists will perform dental examinations to identify early risks of dental infections. Maintain a healthy diet that ensures proper growth and health of the gums and teeth.
